Welcome to Wholesome Tables! I’m Laura Scherling. I studied Nutritional Sciences at UC Berkeley and have been practicing as a Registered Dietitian in the San Francisco Bay Area for over ten years. I am also a mother to two young boys. My passion for health, cooking and healing the environment are important parts of who I am.
My approach to nutrition education is about fostering positive shifts that promote healthy, life-long changes without shame or guilt. My professional experience spans intensive eating disorders treatment, chronic dieting, emotional eating and bariatric surgery (aka weight loss surgery). Additionally, I’ve supported people in managing diabetes and pre-diabetes management, hypertension, cholesterol and heart health through diet, lifestyle and mindfulness.
Why Wholesome Tables? Because the table is where we first form our relationship with food when we’re young, and also where we can repair unhealthy relationships with food as adults. Creating a safe and relaxed eating environment is an essential part of fostering a positive relationship with food, no matter your age or struggles with food. I strive to support families in cultivating healthy relationships with food for their children, and to help prevent struggles with eating as adults. We live in a “diet culture,” and for parents it is incredibly tough to navigate the various health trends and nutrition concerns that we are bombarded by day to day. My intention is to be a reliable and balanced source of information for anybody interested in or struggling with these issues.
Finally, the food system has an enormous impact on the overall health of the environment. I’ve long been a strong supporter of local, sustainable agriculture and farming, and am committed to supporting small businesses, from the family farms represented at the local farmer’s market to the food entrepreneur looking to drive meaningful change in the food ecosystem. I’m also the nutrition expert at NextGenChef, an organization that supports local, affordable and regenerative food culture and cuisine.
I believe that what’s good for the earth is good for our bodies, and I wish to help everyone achieve their healthiest self.
